by Manjula Fernando Customs yesterday foiled an attempt to smuggle in 12,000 pairs of Chinese footwear after declaring a lesser quantity to evade payment of duties that would have amounted to about Rs.2 million. The shoes which arrived from China last Thursday, in a 40 foot container, were detained at the Fort exit point of the Colombo Port for inspection. The consignee, a businessman from Maharagama had declared the goods as 2000 pairs of shoes and sandals of chinese make. This had been his fifth foreign consignment and investigations are under way to ascertain if he had succeeded in similar attempts before. The detection was made by Assistant Superintendent of Customs G.B. Gnanaraj. Investigations are being conducted by Superintendent Jayantha Ponnamperuma and Assistant Superintendent Nihal Pinidiya under the direction of Director N.C. Dissanayake. |
