World's first woman PM's birth anniversary tomorrow

Former Prime Minister the late Sirimavo Bandaranaike's 88th birth anniversary is on April 17, tomorrow. Mrs. Bandaranaike entered politics soon after the demise of her husband, Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike in 1960 and remained in the political arena for nearly 35 years.

A Children's Hospital was established near the Peradeniya Hospital in her memory.

Mrs. Bandaranaike, born on April 17, 1916 in the Ratwatte Walauwa of Balangoda turned out to be a people's leader by becoming the first woman Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the world's first woman Prime Minister.

She was the mother of three children, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Industrial Development, Tourism and Investment Promotion Minister Anura Bandaranaike and Sunethra Bandaranaike.

SLFP Branch Organisations as well as several community organisations have organized a series of religious ceremonies in various parts of the island to commemorate her 88th birth anniversary.
