One killed, nine wounded in Karachi bomb blast

KARACHI, Sunday (Reuters)

At least one person was killed and nine others wounded on Saturday when a powerful car bomb exploded in a district of popular clubs on the outskirts of Karachi, police said.

The explosives were hidden in a car that blew up in a parking area about 1 km (0.6 miles) away from a club where hundreds of people were gathering for a concert by the Indian singer Sonu Nigam, police said.

A 23-year-old man was killed and nine passers-by were injured, witnesses and doctors said. The dead and injured had been on their way to the concert.

At least four vehicles were also damaged, witnesses said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing, but police at the scene said they suspect Islamic extremists were behind it.

Meanwhile Pakistan's paramilitary rangers said on Saturday they had foiled a major attack bid in the restive port city of Karachi, recovering a huge cache of weapons but making no arrests.

The weapons seized in a raid on Friday at a house under construction included a Russian-made mortar, shells and rockets.

"This is the first time ever we seized a 82 mm mortar gun in Karachi," senior ranger officer Colonel Zafar Iqbal Awan told a news conference.

Officials said the mortar could hit a target at a distance of five km (three miles).

Awan said, however, that it was too early to blame any group for bringing the weapons to Karachi.

Separately on Saturday, police seized more than seven kg (15 pounds) of high-grade explosives, several detonators and hand grenades in a raid at an abandoned house in northern Karachi.
