Chillies and onions popular crops

In the seven districts of the North East Province (excluding Ampara) chillies have been cultivated in 1,943.5 hectares of land during the 2002/2003 Maha season and in 463 ha of land during Yala 2003, according to recorded statistics of the North East Provincial Department of Agriculture with its head office in Trincomalee.

During the Maha season 503 ha of land have been brought under chillie cultivation in the Jaffna district. The extent cultivated in the Kilinochchi district was 442 ha of land. The extent of Chillie cultivation done during that season in the other districts are Mullaithivu 156 ha of land, Vavuniya 430 ha of land, Mannar 159 ha of land, Trincomalee 116 ha of land, Batticaloa 137.5 ha of land.

Onion cultivation in the North East Province totals 1787.5 hectares of land during the 2002/2003 Maha season and 1,764 ha of land during 2003 Yala season. During the Maha season 879 ha of land have been brought under onion cultivation in the Jaffna district.

In the Kilinochchi district it was 70.5 ha of land. The area cultivated with onion in the other districts is Mullaithivu 135 ha of land, Vavuniya 48.5 ha of land, Mannar 11 ha of land, Trincomalee 582.5 ha of land and Batticaloa 61 ha of land.
