DSS clinch schools k/o title in a thriller

by Chris Dhambarage

D. S. Senanayake College clinched the Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school knock out limited overs cricket title when they edged out Prince of Wales College Moratuwa by one wicket in a thrilling final played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

After restricting their opponents for 186 runs in 47.2 overs, D. S. Senanayake eventually made 187 for 9 having being well placed at 142 for 3 at one stage. The Cambrians came back strongly into the game after Kanchana Gunawardena and Damith Gunaratne had put on 130 runs for the third wicket. D. S. Senanayake were cruising along towards a comfortable victory with former skipper Kanchana Gunawardena hitting a top score of 70 and Gunaratne stroking an elegant knock of 64.

But after their departure D. S. Senanayake suffered a middle order collapse losing six wickets for the addition of only 37 runs. They eventually scraped home with the help of last man Sameepa Sanasuma and number nine Madawa Perera just like they did in the semifinal game against St. Peter's College a couple of days ago.

Earlier Prince of Wales recovered from an early setback to post a challenging total thanks to an eighth wicket stand of 64 runs between Buddhika Samarasinghe and skipper Kavinda Silva. The pair came together with the Cambrians struggling at 113 for 7 and in danger of being bowled out for under 150 runs. Wicket keeper batsman Samarasinghe changed the complexion of the game by hitting a top score of 43 from 77 balls with five boundaries. Kavinda Silva played a captains knock of 33 from 38 deliveries as the D. Senanayake tailenders collected some useful runs during the latter stages of the innings. The only other noteworthy contribution for the Cambrians came from the bat of vice captain Amila Sandaruwan who hit a fluent 42 from 48 balls with six boundaries.

Opening bowler Dinesh de Silva did the early damage and finished with the best figures of 3 for 22 from 7.2 overs. His partner Pubudu Perera and Sandeep Rodrigo were also impressive capturing two wickets each. However the D. S. Senanayake bowlers were guilty of sending down as many as fifteen wides and four no balls and also conceded too many extra runs during the last few overs of the game.
