Twin mandate for peace and bread inseparable - Suresh

The twin mandate of the people for peace and bread are inseparable. The people are fed-up with the policies of militarism and globalization. The mistakes of the UNF Government should be an unforgettable lesson to the new Government, as its mainstay of power based on the support of exploited workers and toiling masses, said R. K. Suresh, Director, Administration of Ceylon Workers Alliance and the General Secretary of Ceylon Estate Staff Association.

He was addressing a meeting held at Nuwara Eliya Regional office on April 11 to review the present political situation of the country in General, which was attended by the Estate Staff.

Speaking at the meeting, which was chaired by K. Karthigason, Industrial Relations Officer, he said though opportunist politicians representing the plantation workers, during the election campaign stamped the UPFA and the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as communalistic party but the Estate Workers and the Staff voted the UPFA Party rejecting their malicious propaganda, this clearly indicates that the workers and staff in the Plantation sector, who voted in large numbers have reposed their confidence.

He also said that, it was the PA, which created separate Ministry for the Plantation sector on the consistent requests of the Trade unions representing the Estate Workers and in the recent past requests were made that this Ministry portfolio should be given to a upcountry politician, who was with her when the UNF was Governing the Country.

The Workers and the Staff, who embrace the policy of the President and hold membership in the CWA and CESA amidst threatening and intimidation worked tirelessly to ensure the resounding victory of UPFA at the last General Election.

The workers and the staff, who rally round the CWA and UPFA under the Presidency of S. Sathasivam are now become political orphans, as he was not given even an opportunity to enter parliament and represent the plantation workers through the national list. The Tamil people of indian origin staff, and teachers request the President to consider S. Sathasivam to get an opportunity through the National list.

He also went on to say that the Provincial Council is round the corner and requested the gathering to work with dedication and commitment to ensure the unprecedented victory at the Provincial Council Election.

Mrs. D. Niranjala Coordinating Secretary of the CESA also spoke.
