Trincomalee correspondent While the approved cadre of Medical Officers of Health in the nine Deputy Provincial Divisions of Health Service (DPDHS) in the North East province is 61, the Provincial Health Department has proposed that there should be 68 MOHs. But only 32 Medical Officers of Health are available at the moment with a shortage of 32 officers. Ampara DPDHS division requires 7 Medical Officers of Health and 5 are available. There are 11 official quarters available. Kalmunai division requires 10 and 8 are available, but only two quarters are available. The requirement for Batticaloa is 12 but the number available is 7. Two quarters are available. Trincomalee needs 10 officers but only 5 are available. The number of quarters available is 3, Vavuniya requires 4 medical officers and 3 are available. Two quarters are available. Mannar's requirement is 5 but only one is available. The number of quarters available is one. Kilinochchi need 4 Medical Officers of Health but only one is available. The number of quarters available is one. Mullaithivu require 5 officers with only one officer available. There are no quarters. Though Jaffna requires 11 medical officers of health there is just one officer to look after the entire area. No quarters are available even in Jaffna. Official statistics disclose that the NEP require 130 consultant medical officers but only 14 are available, a shortage of 116 consultants. Though 610 medical officers are required only 363 available with a shortage of 288 officers. Requirement of dental surgeons is 104. Available 39 and shortage 65. There is a shortage of 954 nursing officers in the NEP. |
