President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has taken measures to ensure the welfare of civilians affected by the LTTE conflict in the East. Committee Members appointed by the President to oversee these measures are in Trincomalee and Batticaloa on an inspection tour. The committee headed by Kusumsiri Balapatabendi, also comprises Army Commander Lieutenant General Lionel Balagalle, Director of the Human Disaster Management Council Sarath Chandrasiri Vithanage and Secretary, Ministry of Social Services. During their visit, committee members appointed a coordinating committee in the East. It is headed by Provincial Governor Major General Ashoka Jayawardena. Other members of the Coordinating Committee are senior military and police officials, UNHCR representatives and health and education secretaries in the province. According to reports, around 18,000 civilians are displaced in Trincomalee and Batticaloa areas. The visiting committee members have ensured the provision of basic facilities to the displaced. President Kumaratunga has instructed the authorities to allocate funds while the Army has been entrusted with the provision of these facilities. |
