Plunderers will be brought to book - Finance Minister Dr. Amunugama by Pradeep Kumara Dharmawardena and Thilak Ekanayake The deep-rooted bribery and corruption will be eliminated and the country developed on a planned basis, so that its dividends could be passed on to the people. Those who plundered the country's national assets will also be brought to book, said Finance Minister, Dr. Sarath Amunugama. Giving his priorities at his maiden press conference at his residence at Nugawela on Sunday, Dr. Amunugama said he will put an end to the waste of public funds and mobilise all resources for rapid economic development with the objectives of providing as much relief as possible to the under-privileged. The Minister said public servants' salaries will be increased with the implementation of the Devendra Salary Commission recommendations. Dr. Amunugama appealed to public servants to do their utmost in the country's interest. The Minister said the people's aspirations will be given top priority in view of the overwhelming mandate given to the UPFA. "The full cooperation of public servants is vital," Dr. Amunugama said. The Minister said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is committed to uplift the economic potential of the poor. He appealed to all to offer their maximum to bring prosperity to the country. "Production will be increased by providing incentives to the local industrialists instead of confining to the practice of indiscriminate imports. Harnessing of indigenous resource will be helpful to augment production," he stressed. |
