Police fire kills Indian farmer AMRITSAR, India, Tuesday (AFP) A young farmer was killed Monday when police opened fire to disperse nearly 6,000 protesting farmers sitting on railway tracks in India's northern bread basket state of Punjab, police said. Around 100 other farmers were hurt in clashes with police, who used batons and tear gas to try to move the demonstrators off the tracks at Manawala Railway Station, 10 kilometres (six miles) from Amritsar, they said. The police opened fire when the demonstrators attacked a senior police officer who had come to negotiate with them, local police spokesman Kultar Singh said. "During the firing, 17-year-old A. Singh died on the spot," Singh said. The farmers had been protesting against the government's failure to give them cheaper credit, water, electricity and better sugarcane prices. Singh said tension was high. "We have asked state police headquarters to send additional troops to Manawala to keep the peace. The news of the farmer's death has created a lot of tension here," he said. |
