Holding election on Friday has irked Muslims - Azwer

Muslims of this country are waiting to lodge their protest against the Freedom Alliance for holding the election on a Friday. Even the British recognised the religious sanctity of the Muslims, and did not hold elections on Fridays, so that, the Muslims who have to perform their obligatory Jummah prayers will not be put into inconvenience.

This was stated by former Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and UNF National List candidate Alhaj A. H. M. Azwer, at a series of election meetings held in Kuliyapitiya, Wariyapola, Panduwasnuwara, Puttalam and other areas.

Minister Azwer said that this General Election will cost about Rs. 700 million. 'There is a clear evidence right round the country that the Sandhanaya will lose the election. In that event I would challenge the President to resign for causing such an irreparable harm to the people of this country', he said.

Azwer also said that there is a sharp difference in the campaigning of the Sandhanaya candidates. The JVP speaks in one langauge and the PA speaks in another language causing confusion in the mind of the voters. If the Sandhanaya is already indecipherable, how will they expect to rule the country collectively? This will never happen and the country will plunge into economic disaster, disunity and the eruption of the war will become inevitable.

The JVP has formed a 'Junta' and is controlling the government media. They dictate what should be broadcast and telecast as news of their meetings. This has irked the majority of the PA members and they have complained to the President against the action of the JVP in controlling the government media, said the Minister.

Minister Azwer stated that the leader of the UNF is going around the country but the leader of the Sandhanaya is campaigning within the four walls of the President's House.

This shows the respect Ranil Wickremesinghe and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga give to the masses. There are five or six people in the PA claiming that they would be the Prime Minister.

There is a bunch of Prime Ministerial aspirants rather than one. This situation is looked down upon as a comical act by the people of this country. There is a real 'Ranil wave' much evident in the country. The Prime Minister has already travelled more than 10,000 km addressing mass rallies in every electorate. He is the only leader who has visited even the North and East, Azwer said.
