News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | We had many obstacles to overcome - Karu Jayasuriya Kelaniya group correspondent The deputy leader of the UNP and the Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya said at a UNF propaganda meeting held at Hunupitiya junction in Kelaniya electorate in support of the UNF candidates of Gampaha district and the UNP co-organisers of the UNP Kelaniya electorate under the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Prime Minister inherited a bankrupt economy in 2001 which had led the country to destruction. We had many obstacles to overcome and challenges to face. However with a clear vision and a sound management policy we were able to reunite this nation and lay a strong foundation to redevelop this bankrupt economy. He further said that in two years a suffering negative economy was accelerate to grow at a rate of positive 5.5 per cent. The rate of inflation was brought down to a single digit. An increase of export earnings by 18 per cent to US Dollars 2,378. Our tourist arrivals have recorded a 25 per cent growth. Trade has increased by leaps and bounds. These are only few achievements by the present government during the past two years. The Minister stated that the Prime Minister made a great sacrifice to create a peaceful environment by stopping the two decade old war and said the UNP was confident of the people's mandate at the forthcoming election. UNF candidate for Gampaha district Athula Nimalasiri Jayasinghe said that he himself crossed over to the UNP because of the clear and honest policies of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The people of the country too, have reposed their full confidence in him. The international community has recognised him as an able leader in the whole of South East Asia. |
