UNF govt neglected the poor - Anura Yapa

Kuliyapitiya Group Correspondent

UNP supporters rally round the UPFA deserting the party since they are thoroughly fed up with the two years of UNF rule. During the period UNF deprived the poor of the facilities, privileges and subsidies the PA Government gave. In 2001 they supported UNF seeking more but at last they lost what they had, Kurunegala District UPFA candidate Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said.

He was addressing a series of election propaganda meetings held at Eliwila, Galayaya and Thalammehera in Katugampola electoral division.

Yapa added that UNF having come to power with the votes of the poor in the villages giving them clusters of false promises forgot them after coming into power. But they did everything possible for the business community.

They even changed the existing laws to give concessions to the business community. The Government lost several billions of rupees due to the exemption of defaulted tax to the business community under the Tax Amnesty Bill.

While giving facilities and privileges to the business community the Government pruned the Samurdhi Subsidy and withdrew the fertilizer subsidy PA Government gave. The cultivators were adversely hit due to the withdrawal of the fertilizer subsidy.

Former Wayamba Chief Minister and Kurunegala District UPFA Candidate Athula Wijesinghe said that the country would be reduced to a fig swallowed by an elephant if voted for elephant. On the other hand if voted for the betel the country would prosper, since the betel was the symbol of prosperity.
