Jeyaraj appeals to Elections Commissioner to deploy Army

by Negombo Spl.Cor. Alec David

Former PA Parliamentary Affairs Minister and Katana SLFP Chief Organiser Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, Attorney-at-Law making a written representation to the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake, yesterday urged him to deploy Army contingents in addition to the police security for every Voting Centre in the Katana Electorate in order to ensure the free exercise of the right of Universal Franchise for Katana Voters.

Fernandopulle, in the letter requested the Elections Commissioner to strengthen the security measures in the electorate by deploying Army detachments in addition to the security provided by the police during the few days immediately preceding the polling date and also on the polling day, as pockets of underworld army deserters are now active in the area to intimidate and harass the people suspected to be those opposed to the United National Front. Copies of his representation to the Election Commissioner has been sent to the President and the IGP.

Fernandopulle, told the Daily News he personally brought this situation to the notice of the President, the IGP and the Chairman of the Police Commission by telephone.

He said complaints of threats and assaults on SLFP supporters and attacks on their property made to the police of Katunayake, Seeduwa and Negombo have gone unheeded so far.
