Colombo High Court Judge Eric Basnayake, yesterday sentenced Ministerial Security Division Constable Abeyratne Piyasena and E. A. Prabatha Ediriweera to ten years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) after being convicted for robbery of jewellery worth Rs 2.92 million on March 23, 2001. At the hearing it was revealed that the two accused had received information that parcels containing valuables were being smuggled from the Central Mail Exchange (CME). Abeyratne Piyasena had arrested W. Mark Linus de Mel and Dewage Gunatilake (witness) with the parcel containing jewellery on the day in question and had got in to their vehicle near the CME, posing as a Police Officer. At the same time, some 35 officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau who had been nearby on another raid having observed this incident had followed the vehicle of the accused. The accused had been taken into custody near the Slave Island colour lights. The Court observed that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 each and in default another two years RI added to the original sentence. Senior State Counsel Shanil Kularatne appeared for the Attorney General. |
