by Sarath Malalasekera Post nomination incidents of polls violence reached 1,187 yesterday, According to the Police Election Secretariat 935 of these incidents relate to election offences while 252 complaints pertained to Violation of Election Laws. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne is in charge of the unit handling Election Violence. DIG Gamini Navaratne is in charge of the division dealing with Election Offences and DIG Mahinda Balasuriya is in charge of the Police Communication Centre. The UNP had made 308 complaints, PA 30, JVP 99, UPFA 440, SLMC 27, EPDP 14 and other parties 290. A majority of the complaints relate to death threats, the use of criminal force, and abuse, the Election Secretariat said. The highest number of incidents have been reported from Ampara numbering 102, Anuradhapura 80, Gampaha 71, Galle 69, Ratnapura 68, Chilaw 59, Matale 35, Negombo 22 and Moneragala 19. Other incidents have been reported from the Batticaloa, Mawanella, Kandy, Tangalle, Eheliyagoda, Kalmunai, Akuressa, Wattala, Wattegama, Nagoda-Galle, Welipenna, Walapone, Kegalle, Gampola, Kadawatha and Nugegoda police areas.DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne said that public assistance and cooperation during the election period are very important. Public could contact the nearest police station and supply information about the trouble makers in the area.All Police stations have been directed to entertain complaints regarding the violation of election laws from all candidates and from the public. The OICs of Police Stations have been instructed to communicate with the Police Elections Secretariat daily, DIG Wickremaratne said. |
