Impending power crisis : President calls for urgent report

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has called for an immediate status report from the Secretary, Ministry of Power and Energy in the wake of information received by her that the country's present power generating capacity had eroded considerably requiring urgent action.

A letter has been communicated to Secretary, Ministry of Power and Energy V. Jegarajasingham by Secretary to the President W.J.S. Karunaratne.

The President laid down 11 points on which special emphasis should be laid in the status report.

These include the level of usage of thermal power and other sources to meet current demands, the names of the power projects commissioned during the last three years and assessments as to what extent power cuts can be avoided.Following is the full text of the letter sent by Karunaratne to the Secretary, Ministry of Power and Energy. "It has been brought to the attention of the President that the present power generation capacity of the country has been eroded considerably requiring urgent action. In this context, the President has directed me to call for a status report from you with special emphasis on the following:

Power generation capacity of each hydro power project as at now and their adequacy to meet the current demand,

The level of usage of thermal and other sources to meet current demand and their cost as well as their adequacy to operate uninterrupted supply of power,

The latest report on the assessment you have made with the Ceylon Electricity Board regarding the prevailing power supply conditions and action initiated to address concerns,

The names of the power projects commissioned during the last three years and the dates of commencement of their construction,

List of new projects commenced construction during last two years and their current status,

Status of the use of emergency power plants and their details,

Status of the tendering of new projects to be implemented,

The financial situation of the Ceylon Electricity Board as at present and likely development over next three months,

Status of the implementation of the power generation plan of CEB and funding arrangement for each project,

Assessment as to what extent that power cuts can be avoided,

Status of contingency plans to deal with possible blackouts, particularly in the context of the damage caused to Kelanitissa power plant."
