Sylvestrians struggle to 116/8

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports corr.

St. Sylvester's College were not too happily placed at 116 for 8 wickets at the end of the first days play in their 46th 'Battle of the Babes' against Vidyartha College which began at the Asgiriya Stadium yesterday. The match will be continue at 9.30 a.m. today.

There were two interruptions due to rain and bad light which robbed nearly 130 minutes of play in the afternoon before play was called off around 6 p.m.

The match was played on a virtually worn out wicket which had seen nearly five days of cricket and the ball rose unevenly and often at a low trajectory making it difficult for the batsmen to go for their strokes.

Vidyartha winning the toss put the Sylvestrians to bat who lost opener Rajitha Wickremarachchi bowled by Wekadapola for a duck. But the score moved upto 53 before the next wicket fell that of Ravi Karunaratne who was trapped in front for 23.

Wickets kept falling with the introduction of 15-year-old Medium Pacer Nadun Basnayake into the attack who had Chanake Ranaweera caught at the wicket for 17. Tharanga Jayatissa was next caught at the covers by Kulasekara off Basnayake for 0. Hashan Gunaratne ran himself out for 14.

Nadun Basnayake had the prolific run getter Shanaz Najurdeen brilliantly caught at mid off by a low diving catch by Asiri Karunaratne 07 which broke the back bone of the Sylvestrians batting and the score slumped to 67 for 5 shortly after lunch.

Nadun Basnayake bowling a sustained spell had captured 4 for 34 in 20 overs to put Vidyartha on top at the end of first days play.
