News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | UNF neglected all local industries: Mahinda The UNF Government neglected not only the fishery industry but also all the local industries as well as the rural agriculture and started selling national heritage to foreign businessmen, said former Opposition Leader and Freedom Alliance National Co-organiser Mahinda Rajapakse. Addressing a series of election rallies in the South including Hiniduma, Galle, Baddegama, Neluwa and Akmeemana of the Galle District during the weekend, he said during the period he held the portfolio of the Ministry of Fisheries, he took steps to expand the limits of his Ministry by introducing Oceanic Universities and schemes of Aquatic Villages and improved the Fishery Harbours of Ambalangoda, Kalametiya, Dodanduwa, Tangalle, Kudawella, Halawatha, and Kirinda in the South. On the advice of the World Bank the UNP pruned the C. W. W. Kannangara Free Education system. The people must unite to oppose any move for privatisation of the University Education system, he said. He pledged to bring about an enormous development in the fishery industry under a Freedom Alliance Government and to take steps to give due recognisance to the Oceanic University Degrees. Several former Parliamentarians including Piyasena Gamage and Amarasiri Dodangoda also addressed the meetings. |
