UNP General Secretary, Senarath Kapukotuwa and Education Minister Karunasena Kodituwakku, told a press conference at Cambridge Terrace, that the President was taking steps to minimise security of UNP candidates despite their repeated requests to her to intensify their protection. Referring to Saturday's assassination attempt on their candidate T. Maheswaran, Kodituwakku said: "We pass on the responsibility of this incident to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga." "We regret the incident has taken place in Colombo where there is no problem in providing security to election candidates," he said. Maheswaran is receiving treatment in hospital. Kodituwakku said a UNP candidate was already killed in Batticaloa because of poor security provided by police. |
