UNP criticizes President

The UNP criticized the President's action over the Tax Amnesty Act as hypocritical, the UNP said yesterday.

UNP Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said: "When the Bill was passed by Parliament the President had the opportunity to question its constitutionality.

But she did nothing then.

Why in the middle of the General Election does she raise this matter? She knows full well that this is entirely a piece of political theatre.

The time for the Supreme Court to rule on the Bill is long past. Indeed, a private citizen sought to bring this question to the Court and was turned away as being too late. She has intentionally timed this decision to come at the very end of the General Election campaign to mislead and confuse voters". "Furthermore, the President had not one but two amnesties during her period in government - in 1997 and 1998. Shouldn't the Supreme Court rule on these two Bills as well?" he continued.

"Her actions are hypocritical, her motives are dubious and her craving for power unquestionable", he concluded.
