Three hospitalised after alleged attack

by Prasad Purnamal

Chilaw Pradeshiya Sabha People's Alliance member Susil de Silva and two home guards were admitted to the Chilaw Base Hospital on Saturday night with cut injuries allegedly inflicted by UNP goons.

The incident occurred in Madampe while de Silva was returning home after a meeting with Puttalam District Freedom Alliance candidate Priyankara Jayaratne.

He was set upon by the gang wielding swords and blunt weapons.

The two home guards had rushed to the victim's rescue when they too were allegedly attacked by the gang.

The suspects are alleged to be supporters of UNP Puttalam District candidate Janaka Pradeep Soysa.

Chilaw Police are investigating.

Meanwhile, Puttalam District Freedom Alliance candidate Priyankara Jayaratne has written to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and IGP Indra de Silva about the violence in the Puttalam District targeting Freedom Alliance supporters.

Following Saturday's incident, Jayaratne has been provided with two additional police guards.
