President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, expressed her deep shock and condemnation of the three attempts of assassinations reported from Colombo and Batticaloa in the course of last Saturday. An attempt on the life of former Hindu Religious Affairs Minister and Colombo District UNF candidate P. Maheswaran, was alleged to have taken place by shooting when the former Minister was participating at a meeting at Jintupitiya, Kotahena. The Batticoloa District Secretary R.Monagurusamy was alleged to have been shot at by a group of unidentified gunmen. It was reported that an attempt has been made to kill Kandiah Sangaran, an activist of the EPDP by shooting in the Wellawatte area. The President emphasised the right of candidates to canvass their candidacy freely and without interruption and the need of a conducive atmosphere for state officers to perform their duties free from fear and intimidation. Such violence against democracy will not be tolerated at any cost, she stated, according to a media release by the Presidential Secretariat, yesterday. |
