According to Port Authority employees, the Marketing Division of the Colombo Harbour which was hurriedly opened at a cost of Rs. 02 million under the UNF 100 Day Development Programme of 2001 is presently defunct after its inertia from the very outset. This Division never had an officer in charge. The handful of officers appointed were transferred to other divisions. The last of the employees that remained happened to be a woman who is presently on maternity leave. Yet, certain outsiders are enjoying privileges in the name of the Marketing Division. Harbour Employees lament that their hard earned revenue is being squandered away in this manner while authorities responsible remain idle before this national crime. Meanwhile it has been observed that the Harbour Mahapola Dharma Yathra which commanded the esteem of thousands of Buddhists in the country is currently in hiding in a corner of the Port Complex for the last several years. Requests by Buddhists Organizations for its services are turned down allegedly on the ground of needing repairs. The Harbour is rich enough with capable workmen to carry out any kind of repairs to this float. Port workers suspect that the Management has something to hide with regard to the "Dharma Yathra". |
