by Sarath Malalasekera Post nomination incidents of polls violence reached 904 yesterday. According to the Police Election Secretariat 708 of these incidents relates to election offences while 196 complaints pertained to Violation of Election Laws. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne is in charge of the unit overseeing Election Violence. DIG Gamini Navaratne is in charge of the division dealing with Election Offences and DIG Mahinda Balasuriya is head of the Police Communication Centre. The UNP has made 308 complaints, the PA 27, JVP 70, UPFA 336, SLMC 26, EPDP 14 and other parties 123. A majority of the complaints relate to death threats, the use of criminal force, abuse, the Election Secretariat said. The highest number of incidents have been reported from Ampara numbering 58 followed by Ratnapura 51, Anuradhapura 43, Matale 35, Negombo 22, Moneragala 19, Chilaw 18, Galle 9. Other incidents reported are from Batticaloa, Mawanella, Ampara, Negombo, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura, Kandy, Tangalle, Eheliyagoda, Kalmunai, Akuressa, Wattala, Matale, Wattegama, Nagoda-Galle, Welipenna, Walapone, Kegalle, Gampola, Gampaha, Kadawatha and the Nugegoda police areas. Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva has directed all Senior DIGs and DIGs to obtain assistance as and when required from the three Armed Forces. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne said that public assistance and cooperation during the election period are very important. The public could contact the nearest police station and supply information about trouble makers. |
