Workshop on old age psychiatry

by Edward Arambewala

A one day workshop on old age psychiatry organised by the Sri Lankan Forum on Psychiatry in UK in association with the College of Psychiatrists in Sri Lanka will be held at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo on Thursday, March 25.

The workshop will be chaired by Dr. Pearl Hettiarachchi of the Sri Lankan Forum in UK.

Dr. Terrance de Silva (Deputy Director General Medical Services) of the Health, Welfare and Nutrition Ministry will be the Chief Guest at this event, which will be open free to all doctors, NGOs connected with old age and psychiatry and others interested in the subject. Since accommodation will be limited for about one hundred early presence at the venue is advised.

Dr. B. Somasunderam Consultant Psychiatrist UK, the live-wire behind this workshop, which is the first of its kind to be held in Sri Lanka, as old age psychiatry is not being pursued as a separate area of study in psychiatry here, said that he would advise all intending participants to arrive early at the venue by 8.30 a.m. as accommodation will be limited for about one hundred.

Dr. Somasunderam who has been in UK for the last 25 years said that since settling down in UK he has always been thinking of how he could serve his country of origin and its people where he had free education up to university and the position he has achieved in life today was shaped there.

In 2001 he was able to get together 125 Sri Lankan psychiatrists resident in UK into an association, Sri Lanka Psychiatrists Association of UK to serve their motherland, and had since been working on periodic training programmes here on latest developments and treatment procedures in psychiatry for local doctors in association with the College of Psychiatrists here.

He said this was the first workshop on Old Age Psychiatry that he had been able to organise to help improve psychiatry for the aged in the country.
