S.B. Dissanayake robbed Rs. 830m Samurdhi savings - President

by Ranil Wijayapala

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday told Samurdhi beneficiaries she would release their compulsory savings maintained under the Samurdhi movement to respective beneficiaries with interest, under a Freedom Alliance Government.

Responding to questions raised by Samurdhi beneficiaries at a meeting held at the President's House, she said her Government will have to recover the money robbed by Samurdhi Minister S.B. Dissanayake from compulsory savings, when releasing the savings to beneficiaries.

President Kumaratunga said Minister S.B. Dissanayake has plundered Rs.830 million from the compulsory savings of the Samurdhi beneficiaries.

"Samurdhi beneficiaries have not been given proper pass books for their compulsory savings by Samurdhi Minister and he had misused those funds for private purposes", the President added.

Minister S.B. Dissanayake crossed over to the UNF when she handed over all the files on those corruptions to the Bribery Commission, the President said.

She also pledged that she would implement the law in the country to recover the money plundered by those corrupt politicians and to release those funds for the benefit of the Samurdhi movement.

President Kumaratunga said special laws will also have to be passed by Parliament to recover the money taken illegally from the Samurdhi movement and later invested in private banks individually.

She said during the PA regime she tried to issue pass books for Samurdhi beneficiaries for their compulsory savings. But it had failed due to the actions of the Samurdhi Minister.

However, she pledged to release the money to the Samurdhi beneficiaries whether pass books were issued or not.

"To do all these things I will have to take the Samurdhi Ministry under me at least for six months", the President said.

President Kumaratunga also said she would take steps to provide Samurdhi benefits for the needy and to raise the number of Samurdhi beneficiaries.
