Youth Enterprise Forum highlights social responsibility The Shell LiveWIRE Youth Enterprise Forum presented an opportunity for all participating organisations to highlight social responsibility at the Sri Lanka Institute of International Relations recently. Roberto Moran, the Country Chairman and Managing Director of the Shell Companies in Sri Lanka highlighted two inter-related challenges related to an overused term called sustainable development. He said that Shell LiveWIRE had conducted over 300 workshops and touched the lives of over 10,000 youth in 20 districts. He said that all these programs are aimed at providing youth with opportunities to set up their own businesses. Moran also spoke on the commercial sustainability of businesses creating ideas and business plans and translating these into real commercial enterprises, He encouraged all the participating organisations at the forum such as financial services organisations, and business development service providers to work closely to facilitate the growth and sustainability of small and medium scale enterprises. Steven Bartholomeusz, LiveWIRE Project Director said that organisations needed to recognise that this journey has a cost, which can be quantified environmentally, socially and economically and therefore elaborated that organisations had an obligation to instill business ethics to these entrepreneurs so that they establish their businesses in a responsible manner adhering to sustainable practices. Speakers from the Hatton National Bank, The Business Council for Sustainable Development of Sri Lanka, The Sabaragamuwa Development Bank and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry from Jaffna made presentations, reaffirming these issues. |
