Visit to coincide with 125th CCC anniversary:

Latvian delegation to strengthen trade ties further

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC), the premier forum for business in Sri Lanka will meet a nine-member delegation from the Republic of Latvia on March 25 in Colombo.

According to the Chamber spokesman, the CCC had the opportunity of meeting two trade delegations from the Republic of Latvia during the past two years.

However, this is the first occasion that a delegation from the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and industry is visiting the CCC.

The CCC said that the visiting Latvian delegation is interested in two-way trade and exploring business opportunities in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's main export to Latvia is tea, natural rubber, retreaded and used-pneumatic tyres and woven fabrics. The balance of trade is in favour of Sri Lanka and according to statistics in 2003 Sri Lanka's exports recorded Rs. 125 million whereas total imports were Rs. 15.2 million.

The CCC feels that there is a fair demand for Sri Lankan products in Latvia and the Sri Lankan business community should make use of opportunities such as this visit to expand their trade ties.

The delegation which will be led by Janis Leja, Director General of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry will comprise manufacturers, exporters of pianos, cotton knitted garments, roofing tiles/bricks, sauces salad dressings, jams and pickles.

It also includes as importer of raw cotton and one of the delegates is interested in buying Sri Lanka products depending on the price, quality and transport cost from Sri Lanka.

The CCC will also seize this opportunity to sign an MoU with the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and industry on this day.

This would be the first occasion that the CCC will be entering into an MoU in this region.

This link would lead to closer networking and further expansion of trade and investment between the two countries.

The CCC considers this visit to be timely and a landmark event, since the visit coincides with the 125th anniversary of the CCC, on March 25.

The CCC meeting is organised in association with the Honorary consulate of the Republic of Latvia.

The delegates included Vija Berzina, President, SOLO-R-GA, Ilgonis Rozenbaums, Manufacturer of Pianos interested in buying Sri Lankan products, Ms. Tamara Sazonova, RITA, Ludmila Sinavina, Manufacturer of cotton knitted goods, interested in importing raw cotton from Sri Lanka, Valdis Zarins, LODE, Valdis Kokle, Manufacturer of roofing tiles and bricks, Silvija Jarne, SPILVA, Manufacturer of ketchups, horseradish, mayonnaise, tomato sauces, salads, dressings, jams, syrups, mustards, pickles, Janis Leja, Director General, Ms, Baiba Bramane, Project Manager, Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
