Canadian High Commissioner visits Kandy

The Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Valerie Raymond will visit Kandy today.

Her programme will include meetings with the Mayor Senanayake, District Secretary, A. M. L. B. Polgolla, local PAFFREL co-ordinators as well as visits to several projects funded by Canada.

Raymond will present a donation to the NGO New Lives of the Sri Lanka towards the construction of a rehabilitation/vocational training center for local youth. A total contribution of Rs. 650,000 will be made to complete the construction work to accommodate more children to the home and to increase the number of youth trained at the vocational training centre. Rev. Dodammwala Dhammarathana Thera, Director, New Lives of Sri Lanka will receive the contribution on behalf of the organisation.

The High Commissioner will also donate a collection of over 30 new books to the centre for the Study of Human Rights at the University of Peradeniya. The books - on subjects such as Children Law and Justice, Development, Ethnicity and Human Rights in South Asia; and International Refugee Law - will help the centre fulfil its mandate of outreach on human rights issues.

Raymond will conclude her trip with a visit to rural infrastructure projects supported by Canada through the Women's Nutrition Network in Panwila.
