SLMA Anniversary Academic sessions 2004

"Setting Standards in Clinical Practice" is the theme of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) Anniversary Academic Sessions this year.

The INAUGURATION CEREMONY will be held on 24th March. The Chief Guest will be His Excellency Nirupam Sen, the High Commissioner of India and the Guest of Honour will be James Johnson, Chairman of the Council of the British Medical Association.

During the Sessions the SLMA Oration will be delivered by Dr Anuja Premawardhena, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Medicine, Kelaniya on "Haemoglobin E beta thalassaemia: why is it so variable?" Dr U. K. Jayantha, Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Galle will deliver the S.C. Paul oration on "Steroid therapy for nephrotic syndrome in Childhood".

A 'PRE CONGRESS WORKSHOP' on "EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE" will be first event in the Sessions. This will be held on 22nd and 23rd March and the resource persons will be Dr. Peter Greenberg of the Department of General Medicine, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Prof. Don Campbell of the Monash University and Prof. Jeremy Anderson, Professor and Head, Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit of the University of Melbourne.

The workshop will be co-ordinated by Dr Nilangi Dewapura of the Ministry of Health.

The second Pre-congress Workshop is an accreditation programme of the SLMA and the World Health Organization, Geneva. Prof. Shanthi Mendis of the WHO will coordinate this programme on "Applying absolute risk approach to improve cardiovascular health outcomes". Only invited resource persons will participate in this workshop on the 24th March.

The following day, a symposium on "SETTING STANDARDS FOR MANAGEMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES IN PRIMARY CARE" will be held.

Prof. Shanthi Mendis and Prof. A. H. Sheriffdeen will moderate this symposium. The topics discussed will be "Coronary artery disease" (by Dr. Ruvan Ekanayaka), "Hypertension" (by Prof. Rifdy Mohideen), "Cerebrovascular disease" (by Dr. Jagath Wijesekera) and "Peripheral vascular disease" (by Prof. Channa Ratnatunge).

A symposium organized jointly by the "Wound Care Foundation of Sri Lanka" and the SLMA will also be held on the 24th. Basic science of wound healing and clinical applications, diabetic and venous ulcers and wound care nursing will be some of the topics discussed by local and foreign experts in this symposium organized by Dr. Prasad Kumarasinghe.

Dr. D. N. Atukorala and Dr. S. J. Stephen will chair this symposium to be addressed by Prof. A. H. Sheriffdeen, Dr. Prasad Kumarasinghe, Prof. Shervanthi Homer-Vanniasinkam, Prof. V. K. Shukla, Prof. Mandika Wijeyaratne, Ms. Tay Ai Choo and Dr Romesh Gunasekera.

Diabetes, an emerging clinical problem in Sri Lanka, will be widely discussed during the sessions. A symposium on "SHARED CARE IN DIABETES" will be held on 25th March.

Dr. Mahen Wijesuriya, President of the Diabetic Association of Sri Lanka, Dr, Chris Burch, a consultant physician from Grantham, UK, Prof. C. B. Sridhar, a diabetologist from Bangalore, India, Dr. A. L. P. de S. Seneviratne, a family physician and a patient representative will speak during the workshop. "Diabetes - the current state of play in the UK", "Distance Learning for Rural Health Care Workers in India" and "The GP's role in Sri Lanka" are some of the topics to be discussed.

A post congress seminar on "DIABETES MELLITUS" will also be held on the 28th March. "Type I Diabetes Mellitus - overview", "Type II Diabetes Mellitus/Metabolic Syndrome - overview", "Thrifty genotype", "Managing diabetes in the elderly", "Managing cardiovascular risks in diabetes", "Managing hyperlipidaemia in diabetes: the South Asian perspective", and "Diabetes in pregnancy" will be the topics to be discussed.

Prof. Lars Wibel, Professor of Medicine, Uppsala University, Sweden, Dr. Henry Rajaratnam, Consultant Physician from Sri Lanka, Prof David Dunger, University of Cambridge, Dr. Mary Britton, Consultant Physician and Diabetologist from London, Dr. Rosaire Gray, Consultant Cardiologist and Physician, Whittington Hospital, London, Prof. C. B. Sridhar, a diabetologist from Bangalore, and Dr. Chandrika Wijeyaratne, Consultant Physician and Senior lecturer, University of Colombo will be the resource persons of this seminar.

Prof. Rezvi Sheriff and Prof. Upali Illangasekera will chair this seminar In addition, Professor David B. Dunger, Professor of Paediatrics from the University of Cambridge, will deliver a plenary lecture on "Relationship of birth weight, early weight gain, risk of obesity and insulin resistance".
