According to the Police Election Secretariat they had received up to yesterday 405 complaints of Violation of Election Offences and 99 complaints of Violation of Election Laws. The UNP had made 130 complaints, PA 22, JVP 60, UPFA 170 and other parties 122. The highest number of incidents have been reported from Ampara numbering 39. Ratnapura 37, Negombo 22, Anuradhapura 20, Matale 19, Monaragala 19 and Chilaw 18. Other incidents have been reported from Batticaloa District, Mawanella, Ampara, Negombo, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura, Kandy, Tangalle, Eheliyagoda, Kalmunai, Akuressa, Wattala, Matale, Wattegama, Nagoda-Galle, Welipenna, Walapone, Kegalle, Gampola, Gampaha, Kadawatha, Nugegoda and Chilaw police areas. Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva has directed all Senior DIGs and DIGs to obtain assistance as an when required from the three Armed Forces. DIG Wickremaratne said that public assistance and co-operation during the election period are very important. Public could contact the nearest police station and supply information about the trouble makers in the area. All Police stations have been directed to entertain complaints regarding the violation of election laws from all candidates and from the public. The OICs of the Police Stations have been instructed to communicate with the Police Election Secretariat daily, DIG Wickremaratne said. Four attempted murders by shooting and using firearms have been reported on Monday, March 8, from Batticaloa, Kandy, Kelaniya and Mount Lavinia, according to the Police Election Secretariat. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne oversees the Violation of Election Laws Unit while DIG Gamini Navaratne is In-charge of the Unit on Election Offences. |
