by Asanga Warnakulasuriya The Talangama Police yesterday apprehended an army deserter turned robber and seized two hand grenades, 80g of high explosive TNT and stolen household electric appliances valued over Rs. 400,000. The Talangama OIC Crimes, Inspector Ashoka Gunesekara told the Daily News yesterday that the suspect carrying a bag containing explosives was nabbed near the Pelawatta bus stand while he was waiting for a bus to go to Borella. The suspect had told Police that the buyer named Sanjeewa in urgent need of the explosives before the elections had asked him come to Borella for the deal. Investigations revealed that the deserter, highly trained in explosives was attached to Welikanda Special Force (SF) Army camp. Police later raided the suspect's house at Eheliyagoda and had found a computer laptop, cameras, electric items and money worth over Rs. 400,000. Police also found 15 army uniforms inside the house. On the direction of the DIG K. P. P. Pathirana, OIC Talangama Amith Gunaratna is carrying out further investigations. |
