by Asanga Warnakulasuriya The Police Special Strike Force yesterday nabbed three suspects of the "Prince Colum" gang who had planned to gun down five people before the General Election. The targeted underworld figures known as "Chandi", "Chaminda", "Chutta", "Arakku Priyantha" and "Tamil Nadu Podi Kumara" are said to be close associates of politicians, Police said. The suspects aged between 21 and 22 were taken into custody from Grandpass and Angoda along with two T56 weapons, three T56 magazines, 87 bullets, a locally made 9mm revolver and a 0.38 revolver which have been used by the suspects for five murders and one attempted murder. One of the suspects were an army deserter, Police said. Director Crimes SSP Alfred Wijeywardena yesterday said the gang leader "Prince Colum" already serving a jail term for several murders and robberies is alleged to have planned five murders inside the jail using mobile phones to contact the suspects. He is also alleged to have given them strict orders to kill the targeted figures before the elections and had given the location for the firearms, ammunition and money. The SSP said the suspects had revealed that the five murders including double murder of drug kingpin "Kudu Bandu" and a little girl named Sadeepa Kumari (killed during the shooting) and the five planned murders were on a contract basis and the suspects were not aware of their leaders' intentions. |
