There has been no response to date from either the National Police Commission or the IGP on the action called for by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on the conduct of the OIC of the Mawathagama Police a one time bodyguard of Mawathagama UNP organiser Johnston Fernando, who is brazenly promoting the United National Party's Election campaign in the area. The President's initial letter in this connection was sent to the Chairman National Police Commission as far back as January 23, 2004 following public complaints relating to the conduct of Athula Karunapala, OIC of the Mawathagama Police Station. Since there was no action forthcoming the President addressed another letter to IGP Indra De Silva dated March 5, 2004 requesting him to take necessary action in respect of her letter of January 23, 2004 addressed to the Chairman of the Police Commission. In her letters the President charged that the police officer concerned was alleged to have favoured the UNP election campaigns in violation of election laws and against accepted police conduct. He (OIC) was alleged to have been the personal bodyguard of Mawathagama UNP Organizer Johnston Fernando. A case in the Kekirawa Magistrate's Court (Case No.B310-2001) in respect of a robbery of rupees one million and a case of in connection with a treasure hunt filed by the Anamaduwa police are pending against him. He was under interdiction and has been reinstated without an inquiry, the President pointed out in her letter to the IGP. |
