600 graduates being trained to teach in English medium:

Bi-lingual option for O\L students in 375 schools from 2007

by Anjana Gamage

Ten thousand students in 375 schools in the island will be able to sit for the G.C.E. (O/L) examination in 2007 in the English medium in three subjects under the Bi-Lingual Option introduced recently by the Education Ministry.

This was revealed by Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku at the presentation of National Awards on Sinhala language and Literature held concurrently with the Munidasa Kumaratunga commemoration day held at the auditorium of Mahanama Vidyalaya recently.

"Knowledge in Sinhala Language alone is not sufficient today for the purpose of acquiring global knowledge. As the English language is very essential, to achieve this objective the Bi- Lingual Option project was launched by the Ministry of Education. Under this project, it has provided students the opportunity to study in the English medium from grade seven commencing last year, he said.

Education in the English medium is provided in three subjects in 375 schools now. Requests have also been made to the Ministry of Education for permission to expand the English medium project to cover another 100 to 150 schools. Due to the higher demand, the Education Ministry has already started a project to train 600 graduates for teaching in the English medium.

The Minister said that in the modern world, Information Technology (IT) is found to be a very essential subject. As a step of introducing IT for schools, 212 Computer Learning Centres (CLC) were opened in June 2003 and another 263 CLC centres in February this year. This will be enable the students to offer IT as an Optional subject at the G.C.E.(O/L) examination from this year, he said.

The Minister also stressed the fact, that he was able to create a revolutionary change in education during the past two years aiming at four main areas such as providing solutions for teacher's problems, extension of IT to schools in difficult areas, providing opportunities for rural children in studying in the English medium and developing infrastructure facilities for schools.
