PM visits Katunayaka Airport

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe paid a visit to the Katunayaka Airport yesterday to meet construction workers at the site of massive new developments. He was welcomed by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation, Tilak Marapana, Chairman of Airport Aviation Services, Hemasiri Fernando and Executive Director, Gamini Abeyratne.

The office of the government spokesman said he visited the ongoing construction sites and the new pier site which is also designed for the new A380 flights catering to between 400 to 600 passengers per flight as well as regular scheduled flights. The new pier is to be constructed with 8 moving sidewalks and 8 gate lounges and screening equipments booths.

The Prime Minister also visited the construction site of the new cargo building with an area of 12,750sq.m. which can store 100,000 tons of cargo per year.

Chairman of Airport Aviation Services, Hemasiri Fernando said that with the end of restrictions and the Government's 'Open Skies' Policy there has been a tourism boom in the past two years. These infrastructure developments will be able to facilitate the arrival of around 3.2 million passengers per year."

He said, "If we remain on track our goal of 1 million tourists in one year could be reached in the near future. The cargo areas too will be a big boost to trade and help Sri Lanka compete in the world market place."

Executive Director, Gamini Abeyratne said, "Visitors and locals passing through the airport have already found big changes, the immigration procedure has speeded up with double the number of counters, new shops have opened at the departure entrance.
