Public Sector TUs demand of Govt:

Resolve salary anomalies

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

The public sector trade unions will resort to trade union action from March 12 demanding the government resolve salary anomalies in state sector institutions.

The Public Sector Trade Union committee yesterday said they will stage a picketing campaign opposite the Public Administration Ministry on March 12, in protest against the government's evasive action and negligence in resolving the salary anomaly despite their repeated requests. Members and representatives of 66 trade unions, will participate in the demonstration.

The convenor of the Public Sector Trade Unions, W.H. Piyadasa said, the trade unions have decided unanimously to go for countrywide strike action following this demonstration if the government did not take action to resolve the problem before March 23, 2004.

Explaining the anomaly, Piyadasa said that it had emanated resulting from the government's recent decision to increase the salaries of the public health sector by 44 per cent.

"The anomaly created by this is such that it take a minimum of 20 years for the employees of other public sectors institutions to reach the salary scale of a health sector employee," he said.

The trade unions of the public sector informed the issue in writing to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe urging his intervention to resolve it, but it appears that the issue remained unresolved , he said.

Piyadasa said that it was not the intention of the Committee to resort to trade union action at this juncture with the election in the foreground, but they have been compelled to take action because of the lethargic attitude shown by the government to resolve this all important salary anomaly, which is affecting more than 700,000 public servants.
