Horana Vajiragnana Nayaka Thera, President and Ven. Diviyagaha Yassassi Nayaka Thera, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Buddhist Congress in a joint statement yesterday urged the leaders of political parties to put forward and support only cultured and disciplined intellectuals as candidates at the General Election to discard selfish thugs from the political arena and bring back the lost glory and prosperity to the country. Sri Lanka reputed world over for its peaceful and civilised society over centuries has today become the regime of theft, bribery, vice and corruption due to politicians who held reins of power from time to time. Since foreign domination, this situation has gone from bad to worse day by day, it stated. "The time is opportune now to reverse this trend and usher in a reign of righteousness. We must not lose this opportunity. The future of the country is resting in the hands of intelligent and civilised people at large. As pioneers of the course of justice from ancient times, the Maha Sangha urge all concerned to see things in their proper perspective and drive away the unwanted and return to power a Government which is just and righteous," the Sri Lanka Buddhist Congress said. |
