Referring to the recent media briefing by the UPFA, it stated that according to Dr. Sarath Amunugama, vital economic fields like power, water, transport and banks will directly come under state control under a UPFA Government, while according to Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, the UPFA expects an accelerated economic development by encouraging the private sector and by giving it priority. It further stated that under the previous PA rule a number of enterprises such as the Port, the Air Lanka, Telecom, Steel Corporation, National Insurance and Gas were privatized to earn billions of rupees as profits, whereas the JVP is opposed to a policy of privatization. Under such circumstances the business community is seriously in need of a clear interpretation of the UPFA economic policy. Continuing, it said that the country's economy will face a serious collapse under a UPFA government because of the JVP's role in decision-making under their alliance. |
