Only Constitutional Amendment can resolve political crisis - PM

by Ariyaratne Ganegoda

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Wednesday that the current political crisis can be resolved only through a constitutional amendment which will be done in the near future.

He said that virtuous leaders can fashion their administration on the basis of the Dhamma preached by the Buddha to the Lichchavi Royal clan.

The Prime Minister was addressing a Daham Hamuwa after opening a new Atavisi Buddha Mandiraya and unveiling a Ranveta at the Sri Dharmodaya Pirivena, Wellawatta.

The Prime Minister said the Atavisi Buddha Mandiraya and the Ranveta project undertaken under the patronage of the Viharadhipathi Ven. Gurudeniye Uditha Thera had come to fruition within a very short period and he was privileged to open the new facilities at the Pirivena which had rendered a great service to the Wellawatte area.

On his arrival at the venue, he was made to understand that the Pirivena was nearly 100 years old. He said that in the past most people who migrated to the city from the Southern Province had settled down in and around Wellawatte. His paternal ancestors who migrated from the South too had first settled down in Wellawatte before moving into Colombo city.

The Prime Minister who recalled the development of the Buddha Sasana in this country said that when the Buddha Sasana was threatened due to the world war, it was Ven. Welivita Saranankara Sangharaja Thera who revived it by re-establishing the Upasampada in this country.

Thereafter viharayas, dagobas and pirivenas were once again built all over the country which began social and religious service by disseminating the Dhamma to the people.

The Prime Minister said his government is committed to protect and safeguard Buddhism and assist in its development.

He said efforts should be made to spread the pure Buddha Dhamma to other countries as well, without limiting it to Sri Lanka only.

For this young bhikkhus should be provided with an English and Computer knowledge, the Prime Minister said.

Earlier Ven. Weweldeniye Medhalankara Mahanayaka Thera of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Mahanikaya administered pansil to the gathering.

Viharadhipathi Ven. Gurudeniye Uditha Thera was also conferred the honorary title 'Tripitaka Dharmavedi Vagishwara' and an upahara pooja was held in his honour by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, Minister Bandula Gunawardena, former Minister Milinda Moragoda, former MP Raja Collure and MMC Sagara Senaratne.
