ACCA launches Comfest 2004

The Sri Lankan Branch of the Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) recently rolled out the Comfest 2004; the country's most popular inter school commerce competition in Kandy. Hillwood College hosted the inaugural competition for 2004.

Nine schools took part and Good Shepherd Convent with 254 points was the winner while Gateway International became first runner-up. Both schools will represent Kandy district at the grand finals, which is scheduled for September this year.

Ajith Perera, manager ACCA Sri Lanka said "Two years ago we introduced this competition aiming to harness analytical skills, team work, general knowledge and presentation skills among commerce students.

These skills are extremely important when pursuing higher education and thereafter in the professional life of everyone." As a leading body in the accounting profession, I think it is our duty to get involved with commerce students at very early stages like this and groom them towards a better future, she added.

Comfest is divided into four main sections to provide different skills to participating students. First is the Wiz Kid where one student represents each school and he or she has to answer 10 questions of general knowledge. This is mainly to reward students who are well informed about current affairs and news.

The Second division is Student Bulletin where, group of five students from each school has to compile an impromptu magazine covering areas pertaining to commerce. The judging of this section is based on the substance, accuracy of content, layout and style. Third is a crossword puzzle, which is again a group assignment.

Finally, the Ad Act., where students have to act out an advertisement with three minutes. Ability to get the message across, originality and creativity are some aspects that consider when judging Ad Acts.
