Ruhuna University ready to help entrepreneurs - Vice Chancellor by A. W. Gunawardhana - Matara Central Correspondent The Ruhuna university is ready to give a helping hand to creative entrepreneurs, said the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna Prof. Ranjith Senaratne. He was speaking at a reception recently at Solis Hotel, Nupe, Matara to felicitate entrepreneurs of the Matara district. He said the economy of the country is kept alive by the business community. Ruhuna has been the proud birthplace of artists, intellectuals and entrepreneurs. They are capable of meeting any challenge, and to march forward. That is how Sri Lankan entrepreneurs earned international reputation. The chief guest, Kulatunga Rajapakse, Managing Director, DSI Group of Companies said it is essential to have a knowledge in marketing and accounting to become a successful entrepreneur. Determination, dedication and wisdom are added qualifications required to consolidate the success achieved as a entrepreneur. Businessmen contribute billions to swell the coffers of the exchequer - 'Our politicians get their remuneration out of what we pay as taxes'. However, they don't extend a helping hand to entrepreneurs to overcome their difficulties. Lal Keerthi Gunawardhana said he started his business thirteen years ago as a yoghurt producer with only a few head of cattle in his home garden and is today the largest producer of yoghurt. He was recently adjudged the best entrepreneur of the year 2002. "I pay Rs. 2 more than others for a litre of milk supplied by a small dairy farmer". President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Matara and the chairman of the Silicone Coatings Nippolac (Pvt.) Ltd. Raja Hewa Bowalage delivered the welcome address while the Secretary of the Chamber S. A. Ranawaka proposed the vote of thanks. |
