Drop in UAE job market feared:

Foreign Employment Agencies perturbed over new SLFEB insurance policy

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The Foreign Employment Agencies in Sri Lanka fear a drop in the job market in the UAE as a result of the newly introduced insurance policy by the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB).

A number of Recruiting Agencies have found that employers in UAE were reluctant to offer job opportunities to Sri Lankans as this new insurance scheme has become an extra burden to them.

None of the other countries providing manpower to UAE has such a system and they are at an advantage in getting priority in the job market according to sources.

Managing Director of Maritime R Patrick said that Sri Lanka is a country which suffers severe unemployment at present and therefore we should not lose our foreign job market by introducing such schemes as he has lost a number of job vacancies due to this reason.

A spokesman for another leading recruiting agency said that the new insurance system is highly unnecessary as the employee is covered by the insurance policy of the company he works for.

General Manager, Crown Recruiting Agency, Mohamed Aszher who returned from the UAE after a business tour to UAE countries recently said that all employers and companies he visited expressed their dissatisfaction about the insurance scheme because other countries such as Malaysia, Phillipines and Bangladesh providing manpower to the UAE does not have such a system and they can get manpower from those countries at cheaper rates.

This has been brought to the notice of Sri Lanka Consulate officials in the UAE by the agency and the authorities have agreed to take up this matter with the Labour Minister in Sri Lanka, he said.

An official of the Foreign Employment Bureau (FEB) said that this insurance system was introduced to protect female workers going to the UAE as most of them face many problems in those countries. However, the recruiting agencies did not agree with this argument because the FEB also provides insurance cover to them before their departure.
