Over 140 protesters injured in latest anti-Govt strike DHAKA,Tuesday (AFP). About 140 people were injured in violent clashes as Bangladesh was paralysed by a third strike in five days organised by opposition politicians demanding the Islamist-allied government's dismissal. At least 75 people suffered cuts and bruises as police baton-charged protesters and fired tear-gas at six demonstrations in the capital Dhaka, witnesses and television reports said. Another 65 injuries were reported hurt in clashes in five other districts including Bangladesh's second largest city Chittagong as shops, schools and bus services were closed in much of the country. Police and television reports said more than 100 protesters were arrested across Bangladesh. Police blocked anyone from entering or leaving the Dhaka headquarters of the main opposition Awami League party, whose youth wing called the latest strike. While strikes are common in Bangladesh, the latest shutdowns have been unusually violent. Some 90 people were hurt in clashes during Awami League strikes Thursday and Saturday. The Awami League called the protest after Prime Minister Khaleda Zia ignored a one-month ultimatum from the party to meet 15 demands including more control of crime and the return of public money the opposition alleges was looted. |
