The first Executive Committee meeting of the Freedom Alliance was held yesterday under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s leadership at the President’s House. Standing next to the President is Alliance General Secretary Susil Premajayantha. Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse, Posts and Telecommunication Minister D. M. Jayaratne and former MPs Ranjith Navaratne, Ronnie de Mel, Bimal Ratnayake, Vijitha Herath and Nandana Gunatillake were also present.

Addressing leading members of the business community and representatives of international monetary institutions at the BMICH yesterday, Media and Communications Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar yesterday announced that the United Peoples Freedom Alliance was committed to private sector participation to the fullest extent and will sponsor and promote it in every possible way in order to achieve rapid economic growth for the country.

Nearly 500,000 new voters for April polls

Nearly 500,000 new voters will be eligible to cast their ballot for the first time at the April 2 General Election. As a result, the number of MPs to be elected in certain districts too have changed, a spokesman for the Election Commissioner's Department told the Daily News yesterday.
