Film Review:

New and authentic plot

by Karthiga Rukmanykanthan

Puthu Kotaielirrundu Saravanan (Saravanan from Puthu Kotai)

Roxy: Wellawatta

Many youngsters of today dream of travelling and leading a life abroad being ignorant of the strange new world they will have to face. This might be an amusing experience to some and for some others an adventurous experience. Saravanan of native Puthu Kotai village is a responsible young man.

He dreams of travelling abroad to work and pay back his father's debt. He belongs to an ordinary family that believes working abroad is the only way to come-up in life. Luckily, his dream comes true and he gets the chance to go to Singapore but fate had decided something else for him. His life in Singapore becomes risky and dangerous after losing his passport with the additional charge of committing a murder. With all these problems, he is stuffed with the burden of saving the life of a girl who is in danger. The film steals the audience with exciting and thrilling scenes.

The director has cleverly handled the problem faced by these two characters on their way to their motherland. The minus points of the movie are the length of the scenes and the needless separate comedy track of Karunass. The plot and story are new and authentic.

Agile

Danush who plays the role of Saravanan is an agile youth who takes the responsibility to pay back his father's liabilities by saving the money he earns by working abroad. He leaves for Singapore on a three-year contract to work in a factory. He goes there with many hopes but soon everything is shattered.

The hardships and problems faced by the workers are shown using realistic scenes. Danush injures a Singaporean who bullies him. The angry Singaporean takes revenge by stealing his passport and by setting fire to it.

Danush beats him badly and at one perilous point during the fight, the Singaporean falls down on the ground and dies. Danush runs away to escape from the police.

His part-time job provider seeks help from him to save his niece from his enemies. He promises to give him the money Saravanan needs to pay his father's debt. With many difficulties, Danush fights all the expected enemies and the unexpected foreign enemies. Both of them travel to India by road by taking the long route from Malaysia-Thailand-Burma.

The scene where these two cross the Malaysian border by disguising themselves like schoolgirls is humorous. The other two ideas used to cross the borders of Thailand and Burma are thrilling and exciting. On this long journey Abbarna who plays the role of the girl in danger is modern and prefers to live a western life but after seeing the risk Danush is taking to save her from the enemies she falls in love with him but conceals when she come to know he has a fiancee.

Adults

Although the storyline is interesting some scenes are lengthy and more for adults. This movie cannot be watched with a family but should be appreciated for its serious plot.

Will this short and sudden continue forever or just end when Danush handovers Abbarna to her parents?

The movie ends by giving a positive answer to this question with some touching expressions shown by the actors.

Danush who is called the Bruce Lee of South India has driven the movie by giving life to the whole film. He speaks in a loud voice throughout the film to portray himself like a villager but it is quite irrigating on the long run.

His slim and skinny body has allowed him to do some fast stunts and dance movements. He has also sung the song 'Nattu Sarakku', which has a good beat.

Debut Abbarna is a perfect match for Danush and has satisfactorily performed her role as a modern girl who wishes to enjoy every minute of her life.

Comedy

The separate comedy track of Karunass is unnecessary and uninteresting. The scenes where he imitates Ajith of Valee are funny but the dialogues are dreary.

Peter Heinz not only performs the role of Abbarna's uncle well but also has provided the movie with fine stunts.

The weapons that Danush uses to fight especially when he sticks the broken glass pieces on his hands to fight unexpected enemies are fascinating. The 'Malargalae' song sung by Bombay Jayashree is melodious to hear and the music director Yuvan Shanker Raja has provided the rest of the sound tracks with some ordinary music.

The cinematographer Ramesh G has captured some fantastic shots and has brought in some unseen locations to the screen.

Director S. S. Stanly's talent to create mood with exhilarating and stimulating scenes should be applauded. Puthu Kotaielirrundu Saravanan has clearly portrayed a different angle of foreign life and provides some tips for travellers without passport.
