Ridma Rata showcases young talent: 

Rhythm of the tabla


Visharada S. W. Randuwa

An expression of talents on the tabla by over 50 pupils of Randuwa Shilpa Niketanaya headed by Visharada S. W. Randuwa, Tabla Maestro and the prominent super grade artist living today in Sri Lanka, will be held at Bishop's College auditorium, Colombo on February 20 at 7 p.m.

The concert will be a show-piece exhibiting the talents of pupils learning under the guidance of Randuwa, whose dedication is for over 40 years as a teacher for the uplift of musical tradition in Sri Lanka. Many of the students of Randuwa Shilpa Niketanaya will be performing for the first time.

Visarada Randuwa was born in 1937 in Weligama, Galle. He studied at Haywood (College of Fine Arts) Colombo from 1959 to 1961. H. W. Rupasinghe master and P. Podiappuhamy were among his teachers at the time.

He had the opportunity of visiting Maha Baharatha (India)several times and studying further under leading Tablists. In 1978, under the Great Ustad Afaq Hussain Khan, Lucknow-tradition and under Chowli Lal of Farukkabad, Gharana-tradition. His other teachers were Anil Battacharya, Ram Kumar Sharma and Ranganath Mishra. He also studied vocal-music under ustad Mashud Ali Khan and Lele Sahab.



Tabla maestro Randuwa’s pupils

The Education Department appointed him as a music teacher in 1977. Visharada Randuwa passed as a Super Grade artist at SLBC in 1982. He had done a unique service to the field of music, not only as a teacher but also as a great artist.

The programme on February 20 will include the following items:-

* Guru Kula Asiriya (Different styles of Tabla playing)

* Ridma Lalithya (Female pupils performing Tabla)

* The style of accompaniment for Kathak dance

* Tabla Solo set to 10 beats by a pupil

* Akshara Sadhana (a demonstration of learning basic syllables in Tabla)

* The style of Tabla accompaniment to instrumental music.

* A Tabla duet by two pupils who won the First places at the music competition of all-Island schools.

* Advanced Tabla solo set to 16 beats

The entire programme is sponsored by the People's Bank.
