President had no alternative, but to dissolve Parliament - Governor Mowlana

Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana yesterday said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga dissolved Parliament after a careful study of the country's economic situation and activities in the North and East.

He made these observations at the Executive Committee meeting of the Organisation of Professionals of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (OPSLFP) in Colombo yesterday.

Mowlana said prices of several essential commodity items were increased during the past few months. "This affected middle and low income families," he said.

"As there was no other alternative, the President dissolved Parliament", Molwlana said.

The Governor said the Government unnecessarily handed over the management of several public institutions to multi-million dollar companies.

Former Parliamentarian Jeevan Kumaratunga said the Government should have given a fertiliser subsidy to farmers.

This forced them to stop work, he said. OPSLFP, Secretary Hemasiri Jayalath and Deputy President Upali Liyanage also spoke.
