News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | CP, LSSP tie-up with Freedom Alliance by Jayantha Sri Nissanka Sri Lanka's two oldest Marxist parties, the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) and the Communist Party will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) next week with the Freedom Alliance to contest the forthcoming General Election. They were scheduled to submit a draft proposal to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday and possibly sign the MoU early the next week. "We don't want to divide the anti-UNF forces. We were trying to send the UNF home during the last two years," LSSP Leader Batty Weerakoon said. A delegation of the two parties met President Kumaratunga at the President's House to discuss the new political tie-up, former CP MP Raja Collure said. LSSP leader Batty Weerakoon, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, former MP Ven. Baddegama Samitha, Ananda Perera and CP General Secretary Dew Gunasekara and former MP Raja Collure participated in the discussion. "We have had a fruitful discussion with her and we will take the final decision on the new political development at today's party conference," Weerakoon said.He said that in principle the LSSP and the Communist Party are in disagreement with the JVP's position on the ethnic issue. "But we are ready to work with the SLFP as we do not have any disagreement on the ethnic issue with the SLFP. However, we will not become partners of a future SLFP-JVP government, Weerakoon added. |
